Where your Life Path comes from your birth date, your name carries its own numbers. The Expression (Destiny) number reveals your innate talents and purpose — and we'll calculate your Soul Urge and Personality numbers too.
The three name numbers: Your Expression number (all letters) is your overall talents and life purpose. Your Soul Urge (vowels) is your inner motivation — what you secretly want. Your Personality (consonants) is the first impression others form of you. A note on Y: this tool counts vowels as A, E, I, O, U; the letter Y is treated as a consonant, though some traditions count it as a vowel when it carries the vowel sound.
Where the Life Path comes from your birth date, the Expression number — also called the Destiny number — comes from your full birth name. It describes your natural talents, abilities and the goals you are equipped to pursue.
Each letter is assigned a value from 1 to 9 in the Pythagorean system (A=1, B=2 … I=9, then the cycle repeats). Add the values of every letter in your full name and reduce. This calculator also splits out two related numbers:
For the truest reading, use the complete name on your birth certificate, including middle names. Nicknames and changed names carry their own, secondary vibration. Pair the result with your Life Path number for the fuller picture.
The Life Path comes from your birth date and describes your inherent nature; the Expression (Destiny) number comes from your full name and describes your talents and the goals you are working toward.
Use your full name as written on your birth certificate, including middle names, for the core reading. A nickname or married name carries a separate, secondary influence.
The Soul Urge (Heart's Desire) is calculated from the vowels in your name and reflects your deepest motivations. The Personality number comes from the consonants and reflects the impression you make on others.
In the Pythagorean system each letter is given a value 1–9: A–I are 1–9, J–R repeat 1–9, and S–Z continue the cycle. The values are summed and reduced.
A legal name change creates a new Expression number that gradually gains influence, but most numerologists treat the birth-name number as your foundational one.
