Understanding crystals
Beyond the shelf display
Before you reach for a stone, it helps to understand what you're actually working with — geological fact, cultural history, and contemplative practice are three different things.
Crystal Systems
Every crystal belongs to one of seven geometric lattice systems — cubic, tetragonal, hexagonal, trigonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, or triclinic. These structures determine physical properties including cleavage, hardness, and optical behaviour.
Chakra Associations
The seven-chakra system from Tantric Hinduism maps energy centres from base of spine to crown of head. Crystal colour correspondences to chakras are largely modern (1970s onward), though stones have been used in healing across many older traditions.
Origins & Provenance
A crystal's origin shapes its mineral composition and appearance. Amethyst from Zambia reads differently to Brazilian amethyst. Fine specimens from ethical mines hold geological provenance — something the gift-shop variety rarely does.
Historical Use
Lapis lazuli ground to pigment for Egyptian tomb painting. Obsidian knapped into surgical blades. Quartz crystals driving the frequency in every modern watch. Mineral traditions run far deeper and more practical than contemporary wellness culture suggests.

Across traditions
Crystal healing intersects with every other section on divinelore — stones align with zodiac signs, numerological frequencies, Vastu directions, and Ayurvedic constitutions.
