Before Ayurveda tells you what to eat, it asks who you are. The system's foundational claim is that no two people are constitutionally identical, and that the same herb, diet or routine that keeps one person thriving will unbalance another. The tool it uses to make these distinctions is the tridosha framework: three biological forces — vata, pitta and kapha — that combine in unique proportions in every individual to produce their prakriti, their natural constitution.
01What a dosha actually is
The word dosha comes from Sanskrit and carries a sense of something that can go out of balance — a force that, in its right proportion, supports health, and in excess, disrupts it. Each of the three doshas is composed of two of the five elements (the same pancha bhutas as Vastu): vata is air and space; pitta is fire and water; kapha is earth and water. Every person has all three doshas, but in a unique ratio — your prakriti, established at conception — that determines your natural strengths and vulnerabilities.
02Vata: air and space
Vata governs movement — the beating of the heart, the movement of food through the gut, the transmission of nerve impulses, and the flow of thought. People with dominant vata tend to be light, quick, creative and enthusiastic; they move fast, think fast and change direction easily. In balance, vata produces vitality, adaptability and joy. Out of balance it produces anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, dry skin, irregular digestion and a scattered mind.
Vata is aggravated by cold, dryness, irregular routines and overstimulation. Warm food, oil, warmth and predictable schedules pacify it. If you tend to worry, forget to eat, feel cold easily and have an unpredictable digestion, vata is likely your dominant or aggravated dosha.
03Pitta: fire and water
Pitta governs transformation — digestion, metabolism, vision, intelligence and the fire of the mind that converts experience into understanding. Pitta types tend to be focused, intense, articulate and organised; they digest food quickly, make decisions sharply and hold strong opinions. In balance, pitta produces courage, clarity and a sharp intellect. Out of balance it produces inflammation, anger, heartburn, skin rashes and a cutting tongue.
Pitta is aggravated by heat, intensity, competition and spicy or sour food. Cooling foods, rest, nature and a less driven schedule pacify it. If you run hot, get irritable when hungry, have sharp digestion and tend toward perfectionism, pitta is likely dominant.
04Kapha: earth and water
Kapha governs structure — the building and maintenance of tissues, the lubrication of joints, the stability of the immune system and the deep cohesion that holds the body together. Kapha types tend to be calm, steady, loyal and strong; they move more slowly, remember what they learn, and hold emotion deeply. In balance, kapha produces love, patience, endurance and a strong constitution. Out of balance it produces lethargy, weight gain, congestion, attachment and depression.
Kapha is aggravated by cold, damp, inactivity and heavy food. Stimulation, warmth, movement and lighter foods pacify it. If you sleep heavily, gain weight easily, are slow to start but strong to finish, and hold on to things — people, possessions, emotions — kapha is likely dominant.
05How to find your dosha
The most accurate assessment of your prakriti — your baseline constitution — comes from an Ayurvedic physician who examines pulse, tongue, eyes and body structure.
