Of all the questions people bring to Vastu, the facing direction of the home is the most anxious. They have heard that south-facing is bad, north-facing is good, and they want a verdict — ideally before they sign a lease or a deed. The honest answer is more nuanced than that, and more useful. Direction matters in Vastu, but what matters more is whether the entrance is placed correctly within the facing direction, and whether the house's internal layout respects the directional energy it is receiving.
01Why facing direction matters at all
In Vastu, each cardinal and intercardinal direction carries a specific energy governed by a deity, a planet and an element. The facing direction of a home determines which of these energies enters first — literally, because the sun's light and heat enter from different angles, and symbolically, because Vastu assigns active significance to directional force. The main entrance is the home's primary intake point for both natural light and directional energy, which is why its position within the facing wall is as important as the facing direction itself.
02North and east-facing: the preferred orientations
North-facing homes receive the energy of Kubera, the deity of wealth, and are associated with prosperity and positive flow. East-facing homes receive the morning sun directly — Vastu associates the east with the sun and with clarity, new beginnings and health. Both orientations are generally considered auspicious, but the specific placement of the entrance within the north or east wall matters: the northeast quadrant of any wall is the most active and energetically charged position.
For a north-facing home, an entrance placed in the northeast third of the north wall is considered optimal. For an east-facing home, similarly, the northeast section of the east wall. These positions receive a combination of the facing direction's energy and the sanctity of the Ishanya corner.
03South and west-facing: workable with care
South-facing homes are the most misrepresented in popular Vastu discourse. The direction is associated with Yama, the deity of death, which sounds ominous but in context simply means endings, judgment and the completion of cycles — not misfortune. A south-facing entrance is more challenging because it requires careful placement (the southeast third of the south wall is generally avoided; the south-center or southwest-center is considered more manageable) and because the afternoon sun enters from the west, drying and heating the home differently.
West-facing homes receive the evening sun and are associated with Saturn — slow, persistent energy. They are considered neutral rather than specifically negative. A west-facing entrance placed in the northwest quarter of the west wall is the preferred position. Both south and west orientations benefit significantly from the remedies Vastu prescribes — specific plantings, mirrors, symbolic placements and colour choices that mitigate the challenges of the orientation.
04What the entrance itself does
Regardless of facing direction, the entrance should be clear and welcoming. Vastu specifically concerns itself with: the entrance being taller than it is wide; the door opening inward (drawing energy in); the threshold being free of clutter; no beam overhead; and the area just inside being open rather than immediately confronted by a wall or a staircase. Broken or creaking doors, poor lighting and clutter at the entrance are among the most consistent recommendations for correction in any Vastu assessment, regardless of facing direction — they obstruct the energy flow that the direction is supposed to enable.
05Working with the direction you have
Most people do not choose their home's facing direction — they inherit it. Vastu has always acknowledged this, and its remedial tradition is substantial. For a south-facing entrance, a Vastu pyramid, a specific metal threshold plate, or particular plants (neem or tulsi) near the entrance are common prescriptions. For any direction, ensuring the northeast corner of the home is open, uncluttered and ideally hosts a prayer space or water feature activates the most beneficial direction regardless of where the main entrance faces.
The internal layout — kitchen in the southeast, master bedroom in the southwest, living room in the north or east — matters more than the facing direction for day-to-day comfort. Use our Vastu checker to assess the whole picture, then begin with the easiest correction available: the entrance itself, and the northeast corner.
