Jyeshtha

Jyeshtha is the star of the elder — of seniority, hard-won authority and the protective power of those who have come through much. Ruled by Mercury and presided over by Indra, king of the gods, it grants leadership, courage and a fierce instinct to protect.

01The essentials

Jyeshtha — "the eldest, the senior-most" — is the eighteenth of the twenty-seven nakshatras, spanning Scorpio 16°40′–30°. It is ruled by Mercury, which means a Moon placed here opens the life with a Mercury dasha period of 17 years.

02Character and meaning

Jyeshtha natives carry the weight of the eldest, whether or not they are. Capable, responsible and protective, they tend to end up in charge — and to take that responsibility seriously, shielding those in their care. There is real courage here, and a depth that comes from having faced and survived difficulty.

Indra's kingship gives Jyeshtha its commanding presence, but also its trials: like Indra, these natives often win their authority through struggle, and must guard against the pride and isolation that power can bring. At their best they are seasoned, self-reliant protectors; at their hardest, controlling or burdened by a sense of being misunderstood.

Jyeshtha's authority can become controlling, proud or isolated, and its burdens can breed resentment. Its lesson is to lead from service rather than ego, and to let others share the weight it so readily shoulders.
